It seems SABC1 soap Generations remains the most popular programme on South African prime time TV, according to the latest viewership figures released by the South African Advertising Research Foundation.

The figures for the period July 23 to 29 indicate that Generations has about 7 million viewers tuning in every day for some classic drama.

That figure is followed relatively closely by SABC1 dramas Zone14, with 5.7 million; Montana with 4.8 million; Tshisa with 4.5 million and Sokhulu & Partners with 3.7 million.

In the exclusively soapie category, popular e.tv soap Rhythm City bumped SABC3’s Isidingo from its traditional spot, to claim the second position after Generations at 3.3 million, followed by SABC2’s Venda soap, Muvhango, with about 3 million viewers.

E.tv’s Scandal also came out with a promising 2.8 million viewers, followed by SABC2’s 7de Laan with about 2.4 million viewers.

Saturday evening’s variety show, Friends Like These, proved to be a good contender, as it commands about 3 million viewers and the top 10 list is completed by two comedies, Ses’top La and Moferefere Lenyalong, each with 3.2 million viewers.

The results, which were published on the TVSA website, also showed that pay-channel M-Net is slowly drawing in more viewers.

All TV shows are measured using AMPS Ratings (ARs).

The figures cover the prime-time slot ratings, which are considered to be between 6pm and 10pm.

The figures covered the top five comedies, reality shows, dramas, documentaries, magazine shows and soap operas among others.
