A Nigerian man was arrested at an airport in Lagos after officials uncovered $150 000 worth of cocaine stuffed in roasted chickens, according to a report.
According to Huffington Post egg-shaped packages wrapped in gold aluminium foil and tucked into the cooked chickens were discovered by Nigerian police. The man had travelled from Sao Paulo, Brazil with 2.6 kg of cocaine.
He reportedly had hopes that the drugs would buy him a luxury life in his native country after having struggled as a mechanic in Brazil for over six years, Nigerian officials said on Monday.
"This was like a retirement plan for him," Mitchell Ofoyeju, spokesman for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency was quoted as saying.
The suspect, who is currently in custody, is the latest among many who have been caught trying to smuggle drugs into the country.
According to Ofoyeju drugs have been found sandwiched inside the fabric of suitcases, sewn into wigs worn by female passengers, tucked into underwear or hidden in phone chargers and even in a stethoscope, Huffington Post reported.
After tightening their security system with installation of scanners and training agents at Nigerian airports, officials have reportedly arrested more than 100 drug carriers in the past year, Ofoyeju said.
They have also seized about 410 kgs of cocaine, among other drugs.
