After what seemed like an eternity, local actress Terry Pheto finally made her appearance on The Bold and The Beautiful on Tuesday evening.
It had been two years since Phetho shot her scenes for the Emmy award-winning American soap opera. But local fans had been kept waiting in limbo ever since – until Tuesday night.
Judging by the public’s reaction, the long wait by the star of the Oscar-winning movie Tsotsi was worth it. Just a few minutes after her debut episode went on air, a number of local celebs took to Twitter to express their joy and support for Mzansi’s golden actress.
However, what was even more interesting to observe was how Pheto’s appearance seemed to have ignited renewed interest in the soapie.
“Congratulations @TerryPheto I’m watching #Bold and the Beautiful for the first time in yeeeeaaaars. Well done!” tweeted actress Florence Masebe.
Metro FM Award winner DJ Lulo Café also took to Twitter to congratulate the actress: “Yho haven’t watched The Bold in ages, but today jus wanna see Terry Pheto.”
5FM presenter Poppy Ntshongwana tweeted: “Respect and love, lady @TerryPheto!! #ProudlySouth-African.”
For TV personality Bonang Matheba, watching the episode was a nice nostalgic trip back to the beginning of 2011 when she visited Las Vegas to attend the Emmy Awards. She spent plenty of time with Pheto during her stay there and even visited her on the set of The Bold and the Beautiful, she said yesterday. “The beauty about it is that I was on set with Terry when she filmed the very same episode that we watched yesterday.
“I was delighted to watch Terry as she realised her dreams, and what makes me even more proud is that I was there to witness this historical event unfold before my own eyes.”
Describing the event as a big moment for South Africa, she said: “Her appearance in The Bold gives hope to many people who want to achieve great things in their lives. She is making it easy for them to dream and for that she deserves to be celebrated. This is her time to shine, and if we have to shout at the top of our lungs about it, let it be.”
Pheto, who rose to fame following her sterling performance in the Oscar-winning film, Tsotsi, plays the role of heart surgeon Malaika Maponya in The Bold and the Beautiful.
She comes to the rescue of Katie (played by Heather Tom), who suffered a heart attack after finding out that her husband, Bill, and Steffy were having an affair.
Responding to the tweets, Pheto said: “Thank you all for watching B&B tonight. Your support and kind words mean the world to me. I appreciate you all.”
South Africans have until October 5 to marvel at their fellow Mzansi star.
