The live recording of Africa’s first ever Comedy Central Roast – The Roast of Steve Hofmeyr – on Tuesday night at the Gold Reef City Casino’s Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg has attracted a mixed crowd reaction; with some people commenting it was a job well done, while others see it as a joke gone really bad.
With a no holds-barred attitude, the Comedy Central Roast involves a bunch of celebrities sacrificing themselves on the altar of extreme comedy all in the name of fun and spicing up their careers. But for the local entertainer Kuli Roberts, the consequences of her involvement may have seemed harsher than she expected. Roberts isn’t the one feeling let down. So are a few other observers such as singer and social activist, Simphiwe Dana are feeling it too.
According to our source, Dana was so appalled that she even shed a tear when speaking to Roberts on the phone after the show.
“Simphiwe thinks that Kuli’s attacks were way too personal and a bit more racially charged. She didn’t like the fact that she was being attacked by almost every one,” she said. This would explain why Dana took to Twitter. “@ComedyCentral roast of Steve Hofmyr. Only roast I witnessed was of Kuli Roberts. It didn’t sit well with me. I don’t know.”
When approached for comment yesterday Roberts was overwhelmed with emotion and couldn’t speak. Dana was elusive. She couldn’t deny nor confirm the reports, except to say “call me in 30, 20 minutes”, every time we called.
But for roaster David Kau the show wasn’t all doom and gloom. “It was awesome. Everyone delivered. We made fun of each other and lived up to what the roast is expected to be,” he said. About Roberts’ supposed attacks, Kau said: “It’s a coincidence that most of us chose to go for Kuli. Besides, she is always out there in the public eye. Someone as carefree and outspoken as her would certainly make perfect material for many of us.”
Responding to the complaints, publicist Alison Reid said: “All the panellists got roasted and no one escaped, but the title of the TV show is the Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr and the TV episode on September 24 will definitely reflect this.
“The editorial content of the show is entirely at Comedy Central’s discretion and we will decide what goes in and what goes out.”
» Chaos Theory, tweeted: “?@Shooo.... The Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr was incredibly funny last night. “
» Metro FM’s Melanie Bala said: “Trevor is going in on Kuli Robterts ‘I don’t know what’s blacker, your lips or your liver?’ #RoastZA.”
» Singer Chris Chameleon wrote: “The problem with this @steve_hofmeyr roast is it’s going to pose a huge dilemma to those who feel the need to hate him.”
