Mmasekepe Matsebane

On the track Simon Magakwe is a beast. The African 100m champion this week spoke passionately about his favourite local football club Kaizer Chiefs.

The 27-year-old sports science student at the University of Potchefstroom and one-time skilful striker, talks of his love for Doctor Khumalo, why he thinks he can score goals if given an opportunity at Chiefs and who he thinks can challenge him on the track.

Which team do you support?

I am a crazy Kaizer Chiefs fan who believes it’s the best team ever.

When did you start supporting them?

I can’t even remember because I was very young. I just loved how they played, and the most influential thing in my decision to support Chiefs was Doctor Khumalo. I was a huge fan of how he played football and that’s why I started supporting Amakhosi.

When was your first time at the stadium to watch Chiefs play?

It was during the Telkom Charity Cup tournament and Mmabatho Stadium was packed. I was so scared of the large crowd, but from that day I fell in love with the stadium’s atmosphere.

Who is your best-ever Chiefs player?

It has to be Doctor Khumalo without a doubt. He was a special player, I mean his control, how he controlled the pace of the game, his accurate passes and he was very skilful.

What do you do when Chiefs lose?

To be honest, I don’t want to speak to anyone when we lose, especially if it is against Pirates. There was a time when I was involved in a fight with a guy because he was talking too much after we had lost so I confronted him and we ended fighting.

But now I don’t do that, I am grown up and I can contain myself.

Have you ever met Chiefs players, if not, who would you like to meet?

I have never met them personally, and I would love to meet Doctor and George Lebese. Lebese looks like a cool, humble guy.

Which Chiefs player do you think would give you a run for your money on the tracks?

I don’t think there is any Chiefs player who can keep up with me. I hear Lehlogonolo Majoro can run and I have seen Tlou Segolela of Pirates running.

I will easily blow them off, but to save them a bit of embarrassment, I won’t open a huge gap because people will laugh at them.

They can challenge me any day, but please remind them that the track is my territory so I won’t be too nice.

Do you play any sports outside athletics?

Not any more. Now, I only do athletics.
