An Alberton man was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning for speeding after attempting to flee from Johannesburg metro police, metro police said on Sunday.
"He was caught at 180km/h at 4.15am this morning on the N1 in Midrand," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
"The driver exited the freeway at Olifantsfontein offramp and officers had to call for backup to help block off the speeding silver car."
Minnaar said there happened to be officers along the same stretch of road who had stopped at a petrol station who blocked the car off.
"There was no need to go arrest the driver at his home as the car's number plate and his speed was already captured on the speed camera," he said.
The man, who along with six other motorists arrested between midnight and 6am on Sunday, were expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
