Parliament's appropriations committee wants to meet with the Department of Health and national Treasury to clear confusion about the purpose of money allocated for the National Health Insurance (NHI).
Chair of the committee Mshiyeni Sogoni on Sunday said it appeared the department and the treasury were not in agreement on how NHI funds should be used. The health department made a presentation to the committee in Friday on the NHI.
The government launched the NHI in April last year on 11 pilot districts across the country. Sogoni said the government had pumped R150m into it, with the promise that it would increase to R350m this year.
He said the health department had talked of projects such as building clinics and repairing hospitals and that the money was not enough whereas treasury had different ideas.
He said agreement had to be reached before the Division of Revenue Bill was passed on March 14. “When we pass the division of revenue we must be clear what we intend doing with this money,” he said.
