Banyana Banyana have climbed three places to 53rd position in the latest Fifa rankings released at the weekend.
The Sasol sponsored senior women’s national team has made similar strides on the continent moving into fourth position, one place above the 2012 African Women’s Championship winners, Equatorial Guinea.
Captain Janine van Wyk believes women’s football will be exposed to more sponsorship if the team maintains its upward movement on the Fifa rankings.
Van Wyk said it was improvements like these which would necessitate the establishment of a professional women’s football in South Africa.
“The more we improve the more sponsors will come on board and it can only signal a great future for women’s football in the country,” Van Wyk said.
“We’d really like to thank our sponsors Sasol and the football association for the belief they have in the national team and without them none of this would have happened. Without them, the team could not have travelled the world participating in big tournaments.”
Banyana Banyana head coach, Joseph Mkhonza said: “I am very happy; this is good news for me and the whole country. We want to be in the top 10 in the world and among the top three in Africa.”
