The public broadcaster’s Siswati radio station, Ligwalagwala FM, is gearing up to compete with its sister radio stations, including Ukhozi (Zulu), Lesedi (Sotho), Munghana Lonene (Tsonga), Motsweding (Tswana) and Umhlobo Wenene (Xhosa) at the MTN Radio Awards ceremony scheduled to take place at the Sandton Convention Centre on April 13.
The SABC radio stations are competing under categories such as breakfast show presenter, PBS Drama, afternoon drive, night time show, on air packaging and best sports commentator.
Among the Ligwalagwala FM’s award nominees are sports commentators Bheki Letswalo and Sabelo Zulu, breakfast show presenter Dumisani Simelane and night time presenter Pretty Dibakwane.
Last year the radio station scooped the SABC Crown Gospel Awards through the Siyadvumisa programme aired on Sundays.
Ligwalagwala FM station manager Rio Mabunda said: “It is high time that we elevated our game as a station and made inroads nationally. Leading the province is not nearly enough for the station any more. We have what it takes to challenge for top honours.”
