Just like it has been for the most of his career, Benedict "Benni" McCarthy's retirement yesterday was nothing short of controversial.
Bafana Bafana record goal scorer with 31 goals after 80 appearances announced his decision to stop playing competitive football through his management agency, taking everyone including his club Orlando Pirates by complete surprise.
McCarthy's contract with Pirates comes to an end at the end of this month and Pirates spokesperson, Mickey Modisane, said they are expecting him back at the club on June 19 when the rest of the players report back for pre-season.
This is likely to cause tensions with the tempestuous McCarthy, who may not be available, as he has indicated that he will be focusing on getting coaching qualifications and doing analysis on television.
