The New Age Northern Cape reporter, Zandisile Luphahla, was physically and verbally abused by the manager of Sheltered Employment Factories in Kimberley while on duty on Thursday.
Luphahla was following a story about six disabled workers who were allegedly unfairly dismissed. The factory is wholly funded by the Department of Labour to create jobs for the disabled. Luphahla said upon arrival at the factory the manager, George Josephs, told him that if he wrote the story he would sue him together with “the Gupta family who are aligned to Zuma”.
Several workers who were fired recently said that Josephs was running the project with an “iron fist” and discriminated against black employees.
Luphahla said when he asked Josephs for comment, he said: “It happens everywhere, even in government, go and ask (President Jacob) Zuma.”
