Qumbu residents went on the rampage on Monday as the so-called Facebook rapist and murderer appeared in court.
Demanding that Xolisa Sijada be handed over to them, residents burnt tyres outside the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court.
Sijada, 28, is accused of using Facebook to lure women by posting a fake profile and picture.
It’s understood the 28-year-old would arrange to meet his victims in Qumbu, sending them transport money via Money Market from two major retail outlets.
The police were reportedly called to disperse the crowd on Monday after some residents stoned cars. The vehicle of the Mhlontlo municipality speaker also suffered minor damages as it was leaving the court, the Herald reported.
Sijada was arrested at the beginning of this month with his girlfriend, who was later released due to lack of evidence.
Sijada’s alleged victims were apparently strangled with fishing rope and stripped of their clothing.
Out of the seven cases opened with the Qumbu police, three were for murder and four were rape cases. The victims were from Alice, Duncan village, Mthatha, Tabankulu and Mount Fletcher.
Sijada’s bail application was postponed to 23 February for further investigations.
