The South African Police Service (Saps) in Limpopo has commended everyone who helped the police ensure the safe return of two lions who escaped from a trailer in Gearges Valley Road outside Magoebaskloof, near Tzaneen yesterday afternoon.
The two female lions allegedly jumped off a trailer which was being towed by a bakkie.
The police said the two lions were seen by eyewitnesses entering a pine plantation near Vula-Vula in the Georges Valley area.
Limpopo police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said the driver of the vehicle told the police the lions were being transported from one animal enclosure to another.
Ngoepe said one of the lions struggled in the wet terrain.
“One of the lions seemed to have hurt its leg when it jumped from the moving trailer and as a result, it struggled up the wet and muddy hill towards a pine plantation,” Ngoepe said.
Ngoepe said the Environmental Affairs Department would investigate the matter.
