Gauteng Education condemns assault of disabled learner

The Gauteng Department of Education has condemned the assault of a disabled learner from Adeleide Tambo School of disabled, by a food handler.

The incident is alleged to have happened earlier this month. In the video that was captured by a cellphone, the woman can be seen assaulting the learner inside a scholar transport bus.

“We are disappointed about this incident, extra care must be afforded to learners with disability. As a department, we will act vigorously in making sure that perpetrators face the might of the law.

“Officials from the inclusion and specials schools went to the school this morning to investigate the incident. In addition, officials from labour relations have launched an investigation surrounding the circumstances of the incident so that disciplinary measures can be initiated,” said Gauteng MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

According to the department, the parent of the learner was informed of the incident on the 13th of September after the school failed to inform further investigations.

The parent then opened a case against the food handler. She was arrested and released on bail pending further investigations.

Meanwhile, the department added that the food handler has since been removed from the school and the bus driver has been suspended.
