Two JMPD officers are due to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court after a video footage of alleged corruption appeared online.
The viral video revealed the two officers receiving a bribe from unknown men. A man, who witnessed the incident, then recorded the video and uploaded it onto YouTube.
The two officers were than arrested on Sunday morning and taken to Jeppe Police Station where they were detained.
“I have seen the video footage of a suspected fraudulent activity by JMPD officials in a patrol vehicle, after the video was shared on social media and reported to me by various residents,” City of Joburg MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said adding that according the the evidence that video was recorded at around 11:24am on Saturday, 18 March 2017, near Albertina Sisulu Street at Bez Valley.
The video shows two unknown men emptying their pockets to the officials inside the JMPD patrol vehicle.
“After seeing the shocking footage, I requested senior JMPD officials to trace the patrol vehicle and the officers involved. The JMPD Internal Affairs team and senior directors worked around the clock to investigate the incidence,” said Sun.
The suspects are facing charges of corruption and they will also face internal disciplinary processes and could be dismissed if found guilty.
Sun added that corruption is public enemy number one and will not be tolerated.
“Our Department is mandated with the mammoth task of keeping the residents of this city safe,” he said adding there was no place for corrupt officials.
