A 42-year-old detective sergeant is expected to appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo today after he was arrested on charges of corruption.
According to Hawks spokesperson Matimba Maluleke, the detective was arrested after he allegedly demanded an R1 000 bribe from a suspect arrested for a hit and run.
Maluleke said the police officer had promised the suspect that if he paid a bribe, his bail process could be sped up.
He said the authorities were alerted to the crime and set up a trap for the officer where the money would be given to him.
“The Hawks were alerted and quickly arranged for an entrapment that led to the arrest of the suspect at his home immediately after receiving the bribe.”
