Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has released a statement congratulating a provincial task team positioned in the far north of KwaZulu-Natal for arresting six alleged dangerous hitmen.
The team arrested the suspects who are understood to have been operating between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, outside of Richards Bay.
The men are connected to various criminal activities, such as taxi related incidents, police killings, armed robbery and hijackings.
Mbalula’s statement indicated that the suspects were found in possession of seven unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Following incidents of fatal shootings last week, the task team, consisting of a Tactical Response Team, the National Intervention Unit and Public Order Policing, was put together to resolve this issue.
Mbalula has also extended his gratitude to the community that tipped the team off prior to the arrest.
“We have always believed that our people remain in the centre in fighting crime and criminality. I must thank community members of the far north for working with the police and giving valuable information that led to the arrest of dangerous criminals,” Mbalula said.
The minister said this arrest must serve as a warning to all criminals, that the South African Police Service is working hard and will ensure that people have a peaceful festive season.
