TNA's Jeremy Nell wins Vodacom cartoon award Sep 27 2011 6:56AM
The New Age's Cape Town-based cartoonist, Jeremy Nell, has won the 2011 Vodacom journalist of the year award for the Western region in the cartoonist category.
His winning cartoon, called Africa 2.0, depicts the "Arab Spring" sweeping through North Africa as pro-democracy protesters took to the streets.
Portia Maurice, chief officer for corporate affairs at Vodacom, said, "From the feature stories to the exposés, this year's entries really reflect the changing fabric of SA society and the range of social challenges we have to confront as a society. Good journalists are the conscience of our society, we are pleased to be able to help them shine in a small way."
All the regional winners will go on to the national awards ceremony in Jo'burg in November.
Some of the other winners were: columnist, Sipho Hlongwane (The Big Issue); community media, Faatimah Hendricks and Dorianne Arendse (The Voice of the Cape); consumer journalism, Kim van Reizig (You); Financial/economics, Claire Bisseker (Financial Mail); online, Andy Davis, (Mahala); photography, Tracey Adams (The Argus); print feature, Elsabe Brits (Die Burger); print general news, Glynnis Underhill (Mail & Guardian), and sport, Norman McFarlane (Bolander Lifestyle) .
