Five-time grammy award winners Red Hot Chili Peppers have a date with South Africa.
The band which consists of Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Michael “Flea” Balzary (bass), Chad Smith (drummer) and Josh Klinghoffer (guitarist) will open their tour in Johannesburg on February 2 and then wrap it up in Cape Town on February 5.
This is yet another major band which concert promoter, Big Concerts will be bringing down soon after Lady Gaga who will be performing in December and Linkin Park in November.
The Big Concerts Facebook page was inundated with messages from fans who were excited about the announcement.
Lara Goncalves wrote: “Big Concerts you friekin rock (sic). Thanks to u• RHCP I am smiling on a Monday morning!!!”
Shereen Reed posted: “RHCP here i come! (sic) well done Big Concerts been waiting for this, just not stoked on the opening band, taking earplugs for that.”
Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the most successful acts in rock history having sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs. They have also won six Grammy awards including best rock album for Stadium Arcadium and best rock song for “Scar Tissue”.
Local zef rave group Die Antwoord has been confirmed as the curtain raisers for the band.
Widely known for the improvised nature of their live performances, even though their musical style is made up of rock with an emphasis of funk, the band does dabble in a bit of punk and psychedelic rock.
The band which was formed in 1983 has suffered severely and was on the brink of disbanding as its main guitarist, John Frusciante, battled drug addiction and subsequently left the band.
After their five-time Grammy winning album, Stadium Arcadium in 2007, the band took a two-year break to allow its members to focus on individual goals.
In 2011, the band released their tenth studio album, I’m With You.
They are currently touring Europe, Australia, New Zealand and America.
In April the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The seating plan for both the Soccer City and Cape Town stadiums can be found on the Big Concerts Facebook page.
Tickets go on sale from tomorrow at Computicket .
For the Johannesburg show ticket prices range from R315 to R715 and for Cape Town they range between R215 to R665.
