Police officer gunned down in KZN

A 43-year-old police officer Amon Zungu, stationed at KwaZulu-Natal Umbumbulu detective branch was shot and killed on Tuesday morning.

Provincial police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the officer was travelling along R603 road between Folweni and Umbumbulu on his way to work when he was ambushed.

“The suspects opened fire on the police officer resulting in him being fatally wounded. They fled the scene in their getaway vehicle without taking anything.”

It is alleged that a vehicle with four occupants was seen following him.

“We condemn this senseless killing of our police officer, our detectives will work around the clock in tracing the perpetrators.

“We also wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues during this very trying time,” Acting Provincial Commissioner Bheki Langa said.

Zwane said a case of murder has been opened at Umbumbulu Police Station.
