Gauteng police on Tuesday confirmed that two Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) tenants in City Deep, south-east of Johannesburg, were shot dead and two others sustained injuries.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the suspect has been identified as a member of the South African Police Service (Saps) Flying Squad and is said to have been off-duty but was in police uniform.
“The suspect is currently in hospital after he was injured in a shootout with the police and is under police guard,” Masondo said.
Masondo said a criminal case has been opened and is being investigated.
Ward councilor Feeza Chaame said JOSHCO Saps would provide immediate support to the families of the victims, JOSHCO staff and the rest of the residents who witnessed the incident.
“We would like to send our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and will be paying the families a visit,” Chaame said.
