Six men have been killed and several others injured in a freak accident on Bayhead Road in Durban, KwaZulu Natal on Friday.

“Rescue teams had already retrieved the bodies of six men from the sewer pit. Paramedics assessed all six men and found that they showed no signs of life.

Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the men and they were declared dead on the scene,” ER24 said in a statement.

“Several other patients were found on the scene with minor injuries,” ER24 said.

The injured patients were transported to various hospitals.

“The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities are on the scene for further investigations.”

Democratic Alliance(DA) KwaZulu-Natal leader Zwakele Mncwango on Friday sent condolences to the families of the deceased.

“The DA in Ethekwini sends heartfelt condolences to the families of six people who perished during a gas explosion in Durban Harbour just a few hours ago,” Mncwango said.

“To the families, colleagues and friends of those who lost their lives, you are in our thoughts and we extend our heartfelt condolences,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this tragedy.”
