Madagascar cyclone death toll rises to 34
A tropical cyclone that battered Madagascar for several days last month killed at least 34 people, according to a statement by the disaster management on Thursday.
The National Disaster and Risk Management Bureau had previously said that at least 15 people died after cyclone Bingiza swept through the Indian Ocean Island’s southern and northern regions from February 14 to 19.
More than 200,000 people have been affected by the cyclone that left 77,000 others homeless and destroyed swathes of rice fields, the bureau said.
Bingiza was the first cyclone to hit Madagascar in the cyclone season that runs from November to April. In March 2010, tropical storm Hubert killed at least 83 people and affected a total of 187,000.Sapa-AFP
