New revenue stream unity
Multiple award-winning Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo have unveiled a new collaborative effort with Nigerian pop star, Davido and celebrated South African music producer, Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa.
To be released via MTN’s Play and Callertunez entertainment platforms, the new song would be called “Tchelete” (money) for local audiences and “Good Life” for the rest of the continent, including Nigeria.
Callertunez platforms are incredibly popular in Nigeria as they’re used to distribute music, allowing artists to track their distribution earnings and to avoid piracy.
Davido and Mafikizolo first met at Nigeria’s Elite Night event in December last year, where they were both performing, alongside the legendary reggae legend Maxi Priest and 80s biggest selling British R&B star Billy Ocean.
Mdlongwa, who got his first ever Sama for best remix last week said: “MTN is investing in music and distributing our music in this manner helps artists counter piracy, while also developing a new revenue stream. For us as artists, the collaboration between Mafikizolo and Davido was another important example of how we can unite and work together.”
The group’s Pieter Verkade said: “We are very excited about the collaboration between Nigerian and South African artists as it further showcases the musical talent on our continent.
“We are particularly proud that our customers will have access to such rich content at their fingertips via our entertainment platforms.”
Verkade said their platform has proven to be successful for many Nigerian artists including the tribute to Nelson Mandela by Harry Song, which recorded 3.5 million downloads in three weeks.
He said: “We are hoping for big numbers of downloads of the Mafikizolo and Davido song and we also hope that this initiative will break stereotypes that artists have about collaborations.
“In the near future, we look forward to facilitating collaborations between international and local artists.”
